CTLE Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Ann Thebaut – Enhancing Ethics Education

September 19, 2024

September 4, 2024 – Dr. Ann Thebaut holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Purdue University. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», the Director of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»'s Center for Applied Ethics and Humanities, and Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»'s Institutional Coordinator for the Intercollegiate Civil Disagreement Partnership.

She served as Project Director for NEH and Florida Humanities grants that have supported her ethics initiatives at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³». Her work in public philosophy aims to engage others in identifying and addressing significant moral challenges facing the broader Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» community through productive dialogue and collaborative, impactful action.

During her time at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», Dr. Thebaut has developed multiple ethics-focused initiatives, including the Question Project (exploring the role questions can play in fostering constructive dialogue) and the Intercollegiate Civil Disagreement Partnership (to promote students' development as facilitators of conversation across disagreement).

Dr. Thebault incorporates ethics in her philosophy courses and in multiple ways outside of class. She founded the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl team in 2016 giving students an opportunity to compete at the national level. She has since expanded the programming to include high school competitions. Another initiative she spearheaded at the college is called Free to Learn, which focuses on formerly incarcerated students and highlights the impact education has on life after the carceral system.
