Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»PD Reminder for Students, Faculty and Staff on Safety

March 1, 2018

March 1, 2018 – Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Police Department wants to remind all Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» students, faculty and staff that as per Florida law guns are not permitted on Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» property. The Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»PD has a see something, say something policy. If you see anything that looks suspicious, concerning, or just doesn't appear right, should contact the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»PD at 352-395-5519 or 352-395-5555 in case of an emergency.

Tuesday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m., Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»PD arrested a 30-year-old male taking an OSHA class on the Northwest Campus. Another student in the class observed a gun in the subject's waistband and informed an instructor who called police. Police contacted the subject and confirmed he had a loaded 9mm handgun on him. The subject had a concealed weapons permit but apparently did not realize his gun was visible to others. Guns are not allowed on higher education campuses per criminal state statute, including for concealed weapon permit holders, and the subject was arrested and taken to jail.

In reviewing the incident, Chief Ed Book said that the student and instructor did exactly the right thing in calling police and encourages anyone to call law enforcement immediately whenever there is concern for safety.

The subject is not a currently enrolled Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» student.

Join Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Student Life and the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»PD for a Safe Spring Break from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Oak Grove.
