Karla Solis named college ombuds

Karla Solis, Ed.D., a higher education professional with more than 20 years of experience in student affairs, academic advising, enrollment management, and student success initiatives, has been named the 麻豆传媒映画's next ombuds.
She will fill the position held by Dr. Bea Awoniyi, who is retiring after 13 years at 麻豆传媒映画.
Dr. Solis has dedicated her career to supporting students, improving student retention and access, and creating learning environments that promote student success. She is bilingual in English and Spanish, enhancing her ability to effectively communicate with and support various student communities. Currently she is Director of Advising and Onboarding at Guilford Technical Community College.
Dr. Solis began her educational journey at Hillsborough College in Tampa, Florida, where she earned her Associate of Arts degree. She later transferred to the University of South Florida, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction鈥揅ollege Student Affairs. She went on to earn her Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Saint Mary.
Dr. Solis has served in multiple student affairs and academic support roles for more than 18 years, including Academic Advisor, Enrollment Development Coordinator/Recruiter, and Assistant Dean of Student Services. Throughout her career, she has contributed to institutional initiatives focused on student access, engagement, and success, including work on a Title V Hispanic-Serving Institution grant and bilingual student engagement efforts.
Originally from Col贸n, Panama, Dr. Solis moved to the United States at a young age and comes from a family deeply rooted in education and public service. These experiences shaped her commitment to expanding educational opportunity and supporting students.
Her guiding motto is, 鈥淜now your influence.鈥� Dr. Solis remains committed to helping students and their families achieve their educational goals and fostering meaningful, positive student experiences.
Dr. Solis will begin in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs on June 16.
